'm shepard smith. this is the fox report. it's the bottom of the hour. time for the top of the news and nato reports it has a military plan ready should it need to defend turkey from an attack by syria. that statement is its strongest since syrian forces last week began firing shells across the border into turkey. it also ignites new fears that that vicious civil war in syria could soon turn into a regional conflict. a civil war that activists say left more than 30,000 people dead. syria claims the deadly artillery attack last wednesday was an accident, an outcome of that civil war. but it's important to note that many rebels used turkey as a safe haven to launch attacks against the syrian regime. so there is that. now turkey reports it has moved additional military assets to the border region, including more than two dozen f-16 fighter jets. jennifer griffin on the top story at the bottom of the hour. she's live at the pentagon tonight. it looks like it can be contained? >> well, there has been six days of artillery fire across the border between syria and turkey. at first it looked like it

. the nato commander says the alliance is ready to step in to defend turkey from syrian aggression. leland vittert is keeping an eye on this very serious situation live from jerusalem. leland? >> reporter: jon, what's most concerning right now is that those artillery skirmishes between the syrians and the turks are continuing unabated. we are now beginning to get to the second week of those artillery skirmishes which are continuing. the nato chief of staff is saying that he is ready and his forces are ready to defend turkey against outside aggression by syria. and this comes as turkey is now beefing up its artillery, tank military presence and then also moving forward some f-16 fighter jets, forward deploying them to near the syrian border which has become increasingly intense over the past week or so. this can serve not only as a warning to the syrians, but also a little bit of trying to cool down tensions inside of turkey. nato is trying to keep this from escalating into a full war, but from the syrian perspective, this nato warning certainly puts the feeling that if there is a war betwe

at at an event in chicago. bill: nato has a plan to protect turkey as it rages in syria. leland vittert is live in jerusalem watching all this as the violence with turkey, is it getting better or worse or worse, leland. >> reporter: it's about the same. the syrian syrians send a shell over, the turks respond with a an artillery barrage. this is day six or seven of this and it's very concerning. the turks are beginning to amass men, equipment, f-16's are goi going. they don't thing things are going to get worse and nato is there to defend. second of all it cuts to the syrians as a warning. remember the west has been loathe in order to try to military intervene in syria. if a war breaks out between turkey and syria it's very clear the gloves will come off. bill. bill: there is a bombing in damascus, how significant was it this time? >> reporter: another very big bombing is coming from the al-qaida off shoots operating inside syria. it shows how many foreign fighters are coming into the country, inside syria, these are hard-core jihaddists organizing car bombs against some of the syrian leadership
